India on Wednesday is paying homage to the 20 martyrs who had lost their lives in the fierce clashes that took place between the armies of India and China on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Ladakh’s capital Leh for the Indian Army soldiers, who were martyred in the line of duty in Galwan Valley clash.

While the Commanding Officer of 16 Bihar Regiment, Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, and two jawans were martyred on the night of June 15 itself, 17 others later succumbed to their injuries sustained in the clash that took place in sub-zero temperature on the hilly terrain.It may be recalled that the 20 Indian Army soldiers were martyred in the Galwan Valley clash when they were attacked by the Chinese troops evens as disengagement was reportedly happening at the standoff point there.

While the Colonel and two soldiers are reported to have slipped into the river in sub-zero temperatures during the hand-to-hand clashes that went on for hours, 17 others later succumbed to injuries sustained in the violent face-off.

China has also suffered casualties in the incident as per the Indian Army, but it has yet to officially accept the same.
